Viscoelastic Flows in Abrupt Contraction - Expansions

چکیده

IV. Pressure Drop Definition In our experiments we measure the total pressure drop across the axisymmetric abrupt contraction-expansion geometry. We then systematically correct this to report an ‘extra pressure drop’ associated with the contraction-expansion alone. Table 1 shows the axial distance of each possible pressure transducer location from the contraction plane. For clarity, it is useful to define several differential pressures by the location of the pressure transducers used. For instance, the pressure drop across the contraction-expansion measured between pressure transducers 2 and 4 is denoted as P24 = (P2 ! P4). Several different pressure transducers locations were created sufficiently far upstream of the contraction plane to ensure that the pressure transducers were not affected by the presence of the elastically-driven growth of the upstream (and downstream) vortices. In the subsequent measurements only the upstream pressure transducer at location P2 was used.

A stable and convergent scheme for viscoelastic flow in contraction channels

We present a new algorithm to simulate unsteady viscoelastic flows in abrupt contraction channels. In our approach we split the viscoelastic terms of the Oldroyd-B constitutive equation using Duhamel s formula and discretize the resulting PDEs using a semi-implicit finite difference method based on a Lax–Wendroff method for hyperbolic terms. In particular, we leave a small residual elastic term...

Viscoelastic Flows in Abrupt Contraction-Expansions II. Relaxation Time and the Deborah Number

II. Relaxation Time and the Deborah Number NB In what follows we use viscometric information from Note I ( Fluid Rheology). To determine the Deborah number for the axisymmetric contraction-expansion we need to select both a characteristic timescale for the flow and a representative measure of the spectrum of relaxation times of the fluid. A characteristic strain rate based on the local flow con...

Viscoelastic Flows in Abrupt Contraction-Expansions I. Fluid Rheology

I. Fluid Rheology In this note (I of IV) we summarize the rheological properties of the test fluid in shear and extension. The viscoelastic fluid consists of an 0.025 wt% solution of monodisperse polystyrene (PS) (Scientific Polymer Products, Inc.) with a polydispersity of 1.03. The polystyrene is dissolved in oligomeric styrene (Hercules Piccolastic A5) to yield a dilute solution with c/c* = 0...

Flow and Pressure Distributions in Short Heat Exchanger Cores with Abrupt Entrance and Exit

The typical installation of a heat exchange device usually involves a flow contraction at the core entrance and a flow expansion at the core exit. Repeated flow Contraction and expansion are experienced in the flow passages of some compact heat exchangers. The latter refers to the flow passages in the plate-fin type with louvered fins or stripped fins and in the tubular type with dimpled-circul...

Efficient simulation of nonlinear viscoelastic fluid flows

This paper presents a new and efficient method for computing the flow of a non-Newtonian fluid. The approach is based on two independent concepts: Time-dependent simulation of viscoelastic flow: A new decoupled algorithm, presented in P.
